The Reasons Why We Are Getting Fatter. It is hard to avoid, we all know that the rate of obesity has grown immensely over the past few decades.

But why is that? What is the reason why we are all getting fatter?

No, I am not going to explain in this post that we are getting fat by a caloric surplus. I’m assuming you know that by now.

But why is this all of a sudden, why didn’t we get as fat as we are right now 100 years ago?

At this moment there is an insane rate of obesity going on, not only in America but almost everywhere in the world. Why is this happening?

Did we all lose our self-control? Do foods contain more calories than they used to?

Now, of course, there is no one size fits all answer to why all these people are eating too much energy. But there are many factors that have an influence.


There are different reasons why there are more people overweight right now than a hundred years ago. Most of these reasons have to do with our environment.

Here are some of the most common changes that are making us fatter.

We’ve all heard that one person say: “Fat people just don’t have any self-control”. But is that really true? Is self-control something some people just don’t have?

Well, we all have self-control, but what many people don’t know is that your self-control tank can get ’empty’ (1).

On average we make 200 food choices a day. There is a big chance you make some of these choices when your tank is empty. When it is empty our brain uses habits or follow others.

Another big role in why we are getting fatter is portion size. When you go to Starbucks and get asked: “Small, medium or large?”. What do you think the standard or normal size is? Medium?

When we get several options we are tempted to think that the middle one, in this case, medium, is the ‘normal’ one (2). But when sizes get added to this list the middle one moves as well.

When there is easy access to food people eat more when we see if we want it. This is a big problem because there are more and more places where we can get food. Think about a gas station that has almost an entire supermarket in the building as well.


Are there any solutions to this new problem? Well, there is no one answer to this. Because different people get tempted by different influences. But there are some ways to make it easier on yourself.

So staying healthy is getting harder and harder with all the temptations around us. We can’t always say no to these. But there are ways to make it easier on yourself.

One of the best things you can do is to keep temptations out of your house, so don’t buy that chocolate bar or bag of chips.

This takes away the chance of you giving in at night because your self-control is empty.

Another great tip that helps a lot of people is to make if-then rules for yourself. For example: if I go to a party then I only take 1 slice of cake. Making these rules makes it easier to resist temptation and will keep your self-control meter fuller.

The best thing to do is to make it easy for yourself. Know where you go wrong. Do you always go to McDonald’s for lunch when you are at work?

Make sure you got a healthy lunch packed with you. You always end up getting a big fancy coffee at Starbucks, make an if-then rule: if I go to Starbucks then I take a small coffee.

These are the most common reasons and changes over the past years that have made it so much easier to get in a calorie surplus.
