Intermittent fasting for fat loss

Intermittent fasting for fat loss. Intermittent fasting, not eating for a certain period of time. Are people going crazy or are they on to something? This post will explain what intermittent fasting is, why you should do it and what the benefits can be!

Intermittent fasting explained

Intermittent fasting, (IF), is fasting for a certain time period. By skipping some (or one) meals it’s easier to lose weight. IF is not a diet, it’s a way of eating. You still have to make conscious decisions about what you eat when you’re not fasting.

IF is not a new way of eating, in fact, it is as old as time. Back when we still had to hunt down animals to eat it was possible that we went days without eating.

Nowadays food is always available every moment of the day, month and year. We can eat whatever we want whenever we want.

Intermittent fasting and fat loss

Combining IF with a calorie deficit can make it easier to lose fat. This combination increases brain and cardiovascular function.

Combing these two will help you lose body fat. Intermittent fasting can help reduce cravings so you stay in a caloric deficit. (1)

With the time frame of intermittent fasting, you skip at least one meal, most often breakfast. This ‘saves’ you the calories you normally would have consumed with that meal.

This way a calorie deficit is a lot easier to achieve. It takes some time to get used to a longer fasting period. Give yourself some time and room to adjust.

Start off with fasting 2 hours longer than normal and increase this until you are at the desired point. You will experience hunger the first few weeks, but this will go away the more you get used to it!

When should you use intermittent fasting?

There are different ways to use IF in your day to day life. The most common way is to fast for 16 hours a day and have an 8-hour feeding window.

Most people eat from 12 pm. till 8 pm. With this approach, you fast the majority of the time while you are asleep.

When you have a big dinner planned or a cheat meal intermittent fasting can be very beneficial to reduce the calorie surplus.

If you know you are going to eat a pizza or a big dinner of 1500 calories you can maybe skip breakfast and take a lighter lunch. This reduces the damage of fat gain but you can still enjoy a good dinner!

What are the downsides of intermittent fasting?

There are no real health-related issues of IF that we know of right now. But there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

It is easy to get hangry when you’ve been fasting for a while and you’ll get cold easier.

If you have fasted a lot in a day and have many calories left it is possible to get some junk food in. Go for it! But keep in mind the 80/20 rule to make sure you get in enough minerals, vitamins, and fiber

Conclusion

Fasting can be a great way to structure your day-to-day life and make dieting easier. Keep in mind you still have to get your macro’s and micro’s in!

It may take some time to get used to but it is a lifestyle that can fit and help a lot of people!
