Different diets explained: The vegetarian diet

The vegetarian diet. It is a pretty popular diet. It is one of the most popular diets that are not focused on weight loss.

So why do people go on this diet? Is it something that you should try out and are there health benefits to this diet?

General idea

Vegetarianism is not consuming any meat. This includes red meat, poultry, and seafood or any flesh of any other animal.

People can follow this diet for many reasons but most people choose this because they don’t want to hurt animals for their diet. The other reasons can be health related, cultural or just personal preference.

The difference between vegetarian and vegan is that vegans don’t eat any animal products. So they don’t eat eggs and dairy, some vegans also avoid beeswax, leather and silk clothing.

Vegetarians mostly just exclude meat and fish from their diet.

Health benefits

Compared with meat eaters vegetarians tend to take in less saturated fats and cholesterol. This is because saturated fats and cholesterol are largely found in red meats.

Vegetarians tend to take in more vitamins as well as fiber. Of course, this is all possible to do as well when you do eat meat.

But there is not enough research done or data to say how the vegetarian diet influences health long-term. So saying that vegetarianism is better than eating meat or the other way around is hard to do.

The only thing with a vegetarian diet that you need to look out for is nutrient deficiencies. When you exclude meats and fish from your diet.

It is possible that you don’t get in enough proteins anymore. But this can easily be prevented by eating eggs and dairy products.

Vitamin B12 is only found in animal products. But this also includes eggs and dairy so most vegetarians are good here. If you want to be sure that you get in enough go to your doctor the get a test.

Most meat substitutes that you can find in your grocery store have added protein and vitamin B12.

What do you eat?

In the modern western diet meat and fish play a major role, especially during dinner. For some, it is hard to imagine a life without it.

But this is easily possible. When you take meats and fish out of your diet, there are enough foods that you can still consume.

Without meats and fish, it is perfectly possible to live a healthy lifestyle and eat good food. If you are afraid of not getting enough protein you can always go for some protein powder.

It is a good idea to go to your doctor every now and then to get yourself tested to make sure you are not short on anything!

Starting vegetarianism

If you want to try this diet but don’t want to fully commit immediately you can go for a semi-vegetarian diet.

There are many variations of this diet out there. But you can start with 5 days no meat and then 2 days in the week you do consume some meat.

This makes it easier when you go out for dinner to get a good meal in but you still are vegetarian the majority of the time.

Conclusion

Vegetarianism is a great diet that saves a lot of lives of animals. Just keep in mind that you still need to get some protein and certain vitamins to stay healthy.

As long as you don’t shame other that do eat meat or force your diet on them, vegetarianism is an amazing diet with some possible health benefits!
